Optimising hydropower generation in Colombia
Introduction
Swedfund is financing a study to identify and prioritise opportunities to improve and modernise existing hydropower infrastructure in Colombia. The project is being carried out together with the municipally owned utility Empresas Públicas de Medellín E.S.P. (EPM) and builds on an earlier study financed by Swedfund.
The second phase covers eleven hydropower plants with a total capacity of approximately 1,513 MW. The study will look at how the plants can be upgraded to improve efficiency, make better use of water and increase flexibility. The results will help EPM identify and prioritise future investments.

Expected Impact
The project is expected to contribute to increased renewable energy generation, more efficient water use, longer lifetime of existing hydropower assets and greater flexibility in the power system. The study is also expected to help strengthen the resilience of hydropower generation to climate variability, including stronger El Niño events.
