Strengthening grid stability in Kenya

Sector: Clean Energy
Status: Active

Swedfund is financing a study to strengthen the stability and capacity of Kenya's transmission grid. The study is being carried out together with Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) and will identify technical solutions to improve voltage stability in Western Kenya and assess the feasibility of phase-shifting transformers to optimise power flows in the transmission network.

The study includes network modelling, reactive power compensation, conceptual design, technical requirements, and economic and financial analysis. The investments prepared through the study are expected to contribute to a more stable and reliable power system and create better conditions for integrating additional renewable energy.

Expected Impact

The project is expected to contribute to improved grid stability and efficiency and create better conditions for integrating additional renewable energy into Kenya's power system. More stable voltage can also reduce the risk of voltage fluctuations that can damage equipment, disrupt production and, in severe cases, contribute to power outages.

Whistleblowing and Grievance Mechanisms
