Electricity Grid

Strengthening grid stability to enable more renewable energy in Sri Lanka

Sector: Clean Energy
Status: Active

Swedfund supports the state owned utility Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) by financing a preliminary feasibility study for new STATCOM installations to strengthen voltage control in the transmission grid.

Sri Lanka’s electricity system is still heavily reliant on fossil fuels, while the country has set ambitious targets to increase the share of fossil free electricity to 70 per cent by 2030. Expanding wind and solar power will require not only new generation capacity, but also a transmission grid that can manage greater variability and ensure stable voltage. Insufficient grid stability can reduce power quality and, in severe cases, lead to outages that affect households, businesses and critical services.

The study will assess technical needs, optimal locations and system interactions, helping to reduce technical risks and prepare for future investments. By improving grid stability and power quality, the project enables the integration of large scale renewable energy and contributes to a more reliable, resilient and sustainable electricity system.
