Improved wastewater management and access to safe sanitation in Maseru Lesotho
Introduction
Swedfund supports the state owned water utility WASCO by financing a feasibility study to develop an updated and long term investment plan for the city’s wastewater management.
In Maseru, Lesotho, large parts of the rapidly growing population lack access to functioning wastewater systems. Insufficient infrastructure leads to contamination of groundwater and surface water, increased health risks and significant negative environmental impacts, particularly in densely populated areas and in peri‑urban communities.
The project identifies sustainable technical and financial solutions for the expansion and rehabilitation of wastewater treatment plants and sewer networks, with a focus on improved access to sanitation, reduced emissions and opportunities for circular solutions such as biogas production.
